NY Fashion Week: Tadashi Shoji, BCBG, Sergio Davila

tadashi shoji fall 2013 - Optimized Images-001Tadashi Shoji was inspired by the thought of exiled Russian nobility.  He mixed aristocratic details with folkloric motifs.  The palette was dark, with black, deep red and royal blue.

BCBG FW13BCBG from Max Azria showed a lot of pretty patterns, leather leggings, and cozy knit hats.  It was a warm-looking collection considering their design studio is in Southern California.

_MG_1234Sergio Davila showed a chic collection with retro tailoring.  A warm palette of brown, grey and black consisting of natural textiles had an updated vintage feel.

SAG Awards Fashion

SAG awards-001SAG awardsWhat did you think of the red carpet fashions from last night’s Screen Actor’s Guild awards?  Historically, this particular award show didn’t have as much pressure to be formal or as decked out.  Of course, times have changed and everyone needs to be at their very best for every single event…

Ladies of the dark side were Jenna Fischer from TV’s The Office wearing delicately beaded Jenny Packham.  Nicole Kidman wore a gorgeous Vivienne Westwood navy gown with dimensional floral appliques.  Kelly Osbourne also wore Jenny Packham but with more rock n’ roll studded embroidery.

In the light are Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka in Oscar de la Renta.  Glee’s Jayma Mays wore a flowering ensemble from Georges Hobeika and Kerry Washington was stunning in Rodarte.

porsche twin bag_MG_0696Did you know Porsche, the maker of sleek, upscale sports cars also makes luxury fashion goods?  Their Porsche Design boutique on Manhattan’s Madison Avenue has a streamlined, chic fashion collection for men and women with lots of accessories.

As of this spring, the company has unveiled its first upscale handbag.  It can be ordered in a range of luxurious materials like ostrich or crocodile.  It is called the Twin Bag for its dual purpose straps.  The straps can be locked down and carried by hand, or loosened up to worn on the shoulder.

The NYC boutique held a party to unveil their creation, which included a sexy photo booth to pose with the handbags, manicure stations from the posh Exhale Spa and lots of champagne.

Golden Globe Red Carpet Favorites

gg awardsLast night’s Golden Globe Awards were one of the most entertaining awards shows I have seen.  This was thanks to two smart, funny hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.  While the laughs were plentiful, great red carpet style was as well.

Our favorite dramatic black dresses were Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen, Tina Fey in a graphic embroidered L’Wren Scott and Julia Louis Dreyfuss in sweeping black lace ballgown by Vera Wang.

Over to the light, Les Miserables’ Amanda Seyfried was gorgeous in a Givenchy lace gown with train.  Isla Fisher was in a pretty silver embroidered dress by Reem Acra and Amy Adams was in a stunning blush Marchesa gown.gg awards-002

There are always the red carpet looks people love to discuss or hate.  These didn’t play it safe, but they grew on me.  Nicole Richie was covered up quite a bit in her Naeem Khan blue gown, but it was refreshingly different to the cut-outs and skin many others bared on the red carpet.  Kelly Osbourne with her purple hair and putty colored Zac Posen broke many fashion police rules, but it just seemed to work with the rebel.  Halle Berry wore a very busy Atelier Versace print, but because she is such a knockout, she makes it work…

What were your favorite looks of the night?

Pantone just announced that the color of the year for 2013 is Emerald Green.  The color represents  “clarity, renewal and rejuvenation.”  Judging by the offerings from New York Fashion Week for spring 2013, many designers were already in that mind frame:

In gowns and dresses, there was Nanette Lepore, Tadashi Shoji and Zac Posen:emerald green spring 2013

In sportswear, Nanette Lepore kept the green theme going in separates, Joy Cioci added pretty emerald prints, Charlotte Ronson made the jewel tone sexy with flirty pieces.emerald2-001

Explore one of the most diverse creative talents in fashion history at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.  Mariano Fortuny considered himself a painter, coming from a prominent artistic Spanish family.

Living in a beautiful palazzo in Venice, Fortuny invented the innovative hand pleating technique used the iconic “Delphos” dresses.  Working with his wife Henrietta, an accomplished dressmaker of her own, they created collections of textile designs that are still produced today.  Fortuny brought influences of art history and his exotic travels into his collection, like Moroccan djeballas, harem pants, tunics, art nouveau prints…

The exhibit was curated by museum board member Oscar de la Renta and runs until March 30, 2012.
